Maitre Delphine Verhasselt-Van Herdeyn: The Legal Architect Behind Every Mbappe Contract

Delphine Verhasselt-Van Herdeyn is a Brussels-based sports lawyer and the least publicly visible member of Kylian Mbappe’s inner circle. She is also arguably the most consequential. Every contract Mbappe has signed at the professional level — Monaco, PSG, the aborted PSG extension, Real Madrid — has been reviewed, structured, and in many cases initiated by her legal team.

The PSG Dispute — Her Most Public Mandate

Verhasselt-Van Herdeyn became publicly known in France during the PSG contract extension saga of 2022-2024. It was her office that sent the formal demand letters to PSG in 2024 claiming unpaid salary and bonus obligations estimated at over EUR 55M. PSG counter-filed. The dispute went to the French football arbitration body (DNCG) and subsequently to UEFA’s dispute resolution chamber. Her presence in the proceedings elevated the legal sophistication of the dispute well above the typical player-club salary disagreement.

The Real Madrid Negotiation

The Real Madrid free transfer in 2024 — zero transfer fee, EUR 150M signing bonus spread across five years, 80% image rights retained — required a legal framework of unusual complexity. Standard Real Madrid contracts cede image rights to the club. Mbappe’s contract does not. That carve-out, which is estimated to be worth EUR 20-30M per year in additional income, required legal architecture that Verhasselt-Van Herdeyn’s office provided.
