Florentino Perez and Mbappe: The Seven-Year Pursuit That Reshaped Real Madrid
Florentino Perez first identified Kylian Mbappe as a Real Madrid target in 2017, when Mbappe was 18 and still at Monaco. Real Madrid made an offer. Monaco refused. PSG stepped in and paid EUR 180M. The pursuit that followed — spanning seven years, two formal bids, one failed contract extension, and ultimately a free transfer — is the most documented recruitment saga in the history of European football.
The EUR 180M Bid That PSG Rejected
In the summer of 2021, Real Madrid submitted a formal bid of EUR 180M for Mbappe — then 22, with one year remaining on his PSG contract. PSG refused. In the final hours of the transfer window, Real Madrid raised the offer. PSG still refused. French football regulators subsequently investigated whether PSG’s refusal to sell a player who wished to leave constituted a restraint of trade. The investigation went nowhere. But the episode established that Florentino Perez was willing to pay record fees for a player he had identified as the successor to Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Free Transfer — and Its Hidden Cost
When Mbappe finally signed for Real Madrid in July 2024 as a free agent, the zero transfer fee generated significant media commentary. The reality was more nuanced. The EUR 150M signing bonus, paid across five years, represents the deferred transfer fee. Add the image rights structure — 80% retained by Mbappe rather than the club — and the total cost of the acquisition to Real Madrid is closer to EUR 200M than zero. For Perez, the deal was still significantly cheaper than the EUR 180M bid PSG rejected in 2021 for a player who was three years younger at the time.
